As of Friday 19th March, Chaudigital have taken delivery of the Epson Stylus Pro 4000 large format printer.
The highly anticipated printer, a direct replacement for the Epson Stylus Colour 3000 and Epson Stylus Pro 5500 which features 8 ink colour printing up to A2 size sheet and 17" in roll format, has taken months to appear since its launch in November 2003. Due to production shortages and worldwide demand which has literally outstripped supply, Epson has been under immense pressure to produce the machine in quantity, and release the printer on time to the professional markets. Machines are slowly beginning to appear in the UK as of March, but they are currently models released to authorised Epson Pro Focus dealers only (such as Chaudigital). It is expected the first shipment of machines to customers will arrive sometime in April, if not early May for those who have placed deposits for the printer at the end of last year. Customers currently wishing to order the printer from March will need to check with Chaudigital on expected arrival dates, which may be subject to change.
The machine, currently installed in Chaudigital's showroom, is a production model and not a prelaunch engineering unit. As such the quality of output is expected to be final. Initial tests conducted on the 4000 by Chaudigital has deemed the printer to be excellent, if not, exceeded initial expectations in terms of print quality and performance.
Sporting both USB 2.0 and Firewire ports, the heavyweight desktop machine is the first known Epson to have both roll feed and sheet tray feeding built-in as standard - making it ideal for output by photographers for their portfolios, for uses in design houses/digital bureaus for proofing, and for small print runs by galleries/museums. Certainly it is an exciting time for photographers and designers, if not creatives in general, about the possibilities that the machine could produce for users in terms of speed, quality and convenience.
The Stylus Pro 4000 printer on demonstration will be joining its older brothers the Stylus Pro 7600 and 9600 in the Chaudigital London Epson showroom - the addition of which makes Chaudigital the only Epson dealer to have all three of the large format printers on display in Central London.
